I have been fascinated by Antikythera Mechanism, which resides in the National Archaeological Museum in Greece. My interest in this mechanical computer began over 20 years ago. The mechanism itself should not exist as it is evidence of technology that should not have been available at the time of its construction, which is estimated to be 100 to 150 BC. Some even speculate that it could be much older.

Discovered in 1901 off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera by sponge divers, the mechanism is believe to be an astrological clock as it would have shown the movement of the five known planets and predicted astronomical events such as the phases of the moon and lunar and solar eclipses. Who had it created is unknown and no other precision instrument of its age and kind has been discovered ever since.

The following photos show a recreation I made of the original piece to showcase in my own collection of oddities. I built the model from photos and x-ray scans taken from the original.
